Media Player Best Practices

All media players are tested when they are received by the manufacturer.
They are then tested again right before they are shipped to a customer.

Even still, issues can somtimes arise from changing humidity, temperature, jostling of the package during transit or re-installation of the sign, or even spikes in power when plugged in at a customer site.

For this reason we ask that you handle the media player like you would any other computer. Please keep it in a humid free environment, at a normal inside temperature (around 72 degrees Fahrenheit), away from dust, static electricity, and extreme vibrations.

Also when you go to turn off your media player, never cut the power to it abruptly. Either press the power button on the front of the unit to allow the unit to power down (it should take no more than 30 seconds), or hook a keyboard/mouse to the media player and go to "Start" then "Shutdown". Routinely shutting the power to the media player by abruptly cutting its power can cause the media player to cease functioning properly.

We also ask that you always use a surge protector that also has power conditioning anytime hooking up a media player. As a good measure, you should also connect your TV to a surge protector with power conditioning.

Signera offers surge protection and power conditioning products in our system utilizing Watt box products. You may also, if you choose, purchase your own power conditioner and surge protector at most retail stores.

More on Power Conditioning:

  1. Please be sure to not just purchase a power strip with surge protection, as this is not the same as power conditioning.
  2. A power conditioner will ALWAYS list itself as such.
  3. A power conditioner should always list its Energy Dissipation (in Joules).
  4. It should also list its Voltage Protection Rating.
To compare the Watt-box power conditioner Signera provides, here are its current specs (for the WB-200-2):
Breaker Switch Rating
15A
Current Rating 12A
Energy Dissipation (Joules) 2160
Voltage Protection Rating 500V
Certifications UL 60950-1, UL 1449, UL 498, UL 1283

if you want battery backup, most UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply) devices provide some power conditioning and surge protection. You may also connect our Power Conditioners to a UPS.
